The Handmade Bakery →

We are running the bakery according to the principles of Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). CSAs are widely used in America and increasingly in the UK for sustainable food growing and allow the community to reconnect with the cycle of food and have a say in where and how their food is produced, sometimes even take part in the work.

By subscribing to bread from The Handmade Bakery you are making a commitment to both yourself and the wider community.

You are making a commitment to yourself in terms of the health benefits derived from eating organic and slowly fermented bread.

You are making a commitment to the wider community by helping secure an important service and by reducing the community’s carbon footprint by buying locally produced food which is good for the environment.

We want to promote a sustainable UK food culture, where people develop a sense of identity, place and pride around the food they eat. The Real Bread Campaign advocates the model of Community Supported Baking to revolutionise the baking of bread in Britain and as far as we know we are the very first bakery in the UK to use this model.

Pimp Your Pavement and other guerilla gardening campaigns encourage people to brighten up their communities by planting flowers, vegetables and greenery on their streets.

Would this gaem encourage you to take to the streets with seed bombs?

Eat Your Sidewalk challenges communities to eat and live on what they find right under your feet for 7 days straight.

The goal of this immersive event is to change our sense of food, the local and all that surrounds us (plants, food, materials, waste, kindness, communities, and our fellow critters).

Imagine a mash up of the 100 mile diet, plus foraging skills, and commons thinking, all combined with a closeness to the occupy ethos, and the slow food movement, — plus a healthy dose of experimentation and the simple pleasure of eating and sharing!

What would you survive on if you took up this challenge? We’d have a lot of dandillion tea at the National Theatre of Scotland HQ.

The World Wildlife Fund set out 1,600 papier mache pandas around Paris, representing the number of pandas left on earth. A cute but powerful visual image.
